Give your hair body
Source: Organic Style

If you crave more body (any body!) but are wary of perming, we don't blame you.
(Who wants thatch-dry poodle curls that break off after a few weeks?) Ah, but there is a healthy way to create loose, sexy, permanent waves. Ask your stylist for—hear us out, please—a body perm. If images of Julia Roberts in Mystic Pizza are spinning through your head, think instead of Kate Hudson's hippie-ish waves in Almost Famous: "Today's perms are more about creating volume and texture," says Peter Oon, color director at New York's Julien Farel salon.

The upkeep is truly easy: Towel-dry, spritz on a curl-boosting spray, and diffuse or air-dry while periodically scrunching. And unless you've got double-processed hair (in which case, you shouldn't perm at all), perms are safer and more natural-looking than ever. The evidence:

• The new body waves require less processing time, 5 to 10 minutes instead of the 15 to 20 spiral perms need.

• Thanks to the removal of ammonia and the addition of conditioning agents, perm solutions are much gentler.

• A "chopstick perm," in which your stylist wraps your hair around the entire length of a chopsticklike tool (instead of a roller), will create S-shaped curves that are a little straighter at the crown, just the way natural waves would fall, says Oon.

Hair brushes
When it comes to brushes, natural boar bristles are best for the health of your hair and the health of the environment. "They're softer than plastic or metal ones," says New York salon owner Louis Licari, "so they cause less breakage, which is important for treated hair." They're gentler for the planet, too, since they'll break down more easily when disposed of.
