Spotlight on Tobey Maguire
Just
by looking at him, you might not think Tobey Maguire
is one of Hollywood’s fastest rising stars.
The star of the summer blockbuster Spiderman
III and the critically acclaimed films The
Cider House Rules and Seabiscuit, is
indeed taking Tinsel Town by storm with no signs
of slowing down. Although he is an intensely private
person, he does share one aspect of his personal
life that he has in common with many others young
stars, such as Alicia Silverstone (link to her spotlight
in archive) and Josh Harnett – being a vegetarian.
“I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian, meaning I eat
dairy and things with egg products, although I don't
like eggs and I'm not particularly fond of dairy,
either,” Maguire told an interviewer for Eonline.
In 1992, due to a lifelong aversion to meat and
chicken, Maguire decided to become a vegetarian.
About his dislike of meat, the actor says, “I
would start imagining what I was eating and what
kind of life the animal led and all that kind of
stuff.”
Since becoming a vegetarian, he has learned to eat
and cook to fit his new lifestyle. He is a big fan
of nuts and tofu, something he adds to everything,
including pasta. He also enjoys gourmet vegetarian
pizza with a side of broccoli.*
Because
of the physical demands of his latest series of Spiderman films,
Maguire spent six months prior to filming transforming
his body from soft to solid. Maguire’s trainer,
Greg Joujon-Roche, founder of Holistic Fitness, the
L.A. health studio, adapted his vegetarian diet based
on their workouts. For breakfast Joujon-Roche made
the vegetarian actor a "high-protein shake that
included nuts, essential oils and vitamins." Lunch,
he says, was often "marinated tofu with broccoli
and walnuts and dinner a big veggie burger withbrown
rice." The menu varied with Maguire's output. "If
his workout was pure weights," says Joujon-Roche, "he
needed protein. If he did cardio, he'd have a shake
of all carbs.”** Maguire’s efforts paid
off, as he was able to do all his own stunts and
flips in the movie, something he attributes to being
in top physical shape.
To top it all off, Maguire is known around Hollywood
as a nice guy. Recently, when approached by two fans
at Newsroom Cafe in Los Angeles, Maguire invited
the girls to share a meal with him when he learned
that they were vegetarians too.***
