Dairy allergies occur when the body’s immune system reacts to milk proteins that are incorrectly believed to be harmful. There are three types of reactions to a milk allergy: skin reactions which may include an itchy red rash, hives, eczema, swelling of lips, mouth, tongue, face or throat, allergic “shiners” (black eyes); stomach and intestinal reactions which may include abdominal pain and bloating, diarrhea, gas, cramps, vomiting; nose, throat and lung reactions which may include runny nose, sneezing, watery and/or itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath.  Milk allergies have even been documented to cause anaphylactic shock and even death.

Dairy allergies should not be confused with lactose intolerance but often times are (see Special Diets – Lactose Intolerance).  Only a very small percentage of people are actually allergic to milk.  If you think you might be suffering from a dairy allergy or lactose intolerance you should consult your doctor.

While most dairy or milk allergies are discovered during infancy, they can also develop at later stages in life.  In most cases though a person will outgrow the allergy and symptoms will disappear completely.  No treatments exist at this time to force the immune system into recognizing milk proteins as harmless in a person with dairy allergies.   Avoidance of all milk derived products is the only way to prevent dairy allergy reactions from occurring.

Amy’s Kitchen’s “Dairy Free” products do not contain lactose or milk proteins.  If you would like to avoid milk proteins or dairy completely, you should only purchase Amy’s products that are labeled “Dairy Free”, “Non-dairy” or “Vegan”.

Amy’s understands that people differ in the amounts and types of foods they can handle.  We also understand how hard it can be for individuals, especially for children and young adults, to limit their consumption of age-old favorites including Pizzas, Lasagnas and Macaroni and Cheese.  That’s why we’ve created 70 Non-Dairy and Vegan options; try two of Amy’s newest Non-Dairy choices our Rice Crust Spinach Pizza and Baked Ziti Bowl.

Fan Letters:

Dear Amy,
My daughter was diagnosed with a soy/dairy allergy at a month old. Since I was breast-feeding this meant that I could not eat anything with those things in it. This is very difficult and made me look at all the labels. I didn't realize half the stuff I was putting in my body before that. Thankfully I stumbled across your webpage after a rough couple of months! How great was it to not only be able to eat food that was healthy but SO GOOD! I was amazed and in love with the cakes I found in the frozen section. I also was able to have pizza, which is hard to do with no dairy. Thank you so much for all the wonderful things you make available for people like my daughter and me! I really enjoy your webpage and find it a great help that everything was labeled for me!

Dear Amy,
I just wanted to take the time to let you know how much I love your frozen entrees. I have severe dairy allergies and your vegan entrees allow me to enjoy tasty dishes with the comfort that I know they are dairy-free. Thank you so much for being a company I can trust.

Dear Amy,
I cannot tell you how elated I am, having just tried your Bistro burger. I am gluten intolerant, lactose intolerant and newly vegetarian and I thought it quite possible I might never eat again!

Having just had my first burger, I had to go to your website and see what else is out there and am so excited that I am not relegated to eating cardboard for the rest of my days.

Thank you, Amy!

Hello Everyone at Amy's,
I have been allergic to any form or amount of dairy since I was in my early teens, almost 4 decades of not eating cheese, ice cream, pizza etc. I would tell my husband as he was eating something I couldn't have that I hated him (at least for that moment). I have what is called a delayed action allergy, meaning that I can eat something and have the effect of it 3 to 4 days later. And the way it reacts for me is sever migraines and vomiting, not at all pleasant. I hadn't had pizza since my teens until I saw yours offered in my local A&P. The 'cheese' didn't melt all that well but it was heaven. I now have it at least once a month. My local stores don't carry a large selection of your goods, and I've asked them to, but there's not enough call for them. I am going to get your newsletter so I can keep up on the new products and try to convince them to carry more.
Thank you for making wonderful products that I can consume without
worry.
Sincerely,
RobinBeth Faulkner (age 51)

Amy's KitchenDear Amy,
I want to thank you for providing quality products for families like mine that have many diet restrictions. My son is allergic to milk and its by products and pizza is his weakness. Without your pizza he would have missed numerous pizza parties.

Thank You,
Hanifah Rios

Dear Amy,
I just wanted to send a quick e mail to say thank you so much!! My 2 year old son has life threatening food allergies to dairy and soy and it is so hard to find things for him to eat. Not to mention that he is the worlds pickiest eater!! I shop at Wegman’s here in NJ and they carry a variety of your foods. He loves the dairy free pizza and burritos. I just wish that they had a little more variety of the dairy free foods but hey beggars can't be choosers I guess. Thank you so much for offering foods that my extremely picky, food allergy son will eat (sometimes anyway):)

Dear Amy,
Thank you so much for making such fabulous, tasty, healthy food. My kids it, and I especially love your dairy-free options. I became allergic to dairy about 10 years ago, and your Roasted Vegetable pizza has been such a treat.
All the Best,
Kelly

Amy's KitchenDear Amy,
I just want to take the time and tell you how "WONDERFUL" your dairy-free products are. My daughter Morgan is now 8, and very allergic to all dairy. So naturally we are very creative with meals and they are great! Low and behold we came upon AMY'S in our grocery store. She loves everything you have non-dairy. The store doesn't carry all the
non-dairy items, but we keep going back at least once a week to see. Today they had the vegetable pocket, WOW, she gave it a "10". Keep up the great job! Between Amy's and Tofutti, the children can have a normal life, thanks so much, looking forward to new non dairy items.
